I use DigiKam because unlike most photo managers, it:
1. doesn't assume you are clueless with your photo organisation and 
therefore it actually uses the existing directory tree structure.
2. doesn't move/copy all your photos into its own database/storage area.
3. has the ability to read/store metadata in the EXIF so it follows your 
photos around rather than being restricted to its own database (e.g. 
descriptions, tagged people, geolocation, etc.).  It uses an internal 
database to make searches fast, but with the right options set it keeps 
the database and EXIF synchronised.
