there is an option to choose s1 s3 or s1&s3 in acpi settings, however the 
machine isn't sleeping when the network interface seems to go down, using the 
kvm attached keyboard the kvm attached monitor instantly wakes up to show the 
login prompt which as far as i can tell means that the box can't have been 
sleeping, but merely waking the monitor up to show the prompt by pressing a 
key on the keyboard brings the network interface back up!
