Nothing wrong with CNAMEs so long as you understand the restrictions,
IMHO.  (And they are, in fact, extremely sensible in many cases where
you are relying on a third party service since it may change IP address
in the future).

I should take this opportunity to mention that Amazon AWS seems to use
illegal CNAMEs all over the place (CNAMEs pointing at other CNAMEs), so
they must work reasonably reliably even though they aren't supposed to!
