Hi,

On 19/02/2008, neil <neil@nwjones.demon.co.uk> wrote:

On boot I got these messages.

The hard disk is brand new. I replaced the old disk because of errors.

What is going on? It looks as if it is unlikely it is the disk.

I'm no expert, but I've seen a lot of systems die, and only some of them died because of something
I did :-)

I would first make sure that your cables are good - the right type, and properly connected. I've seen
plenty of problems like this due to ropey IDE or SATA cables. You didn't mention what sort of disc
or controller/motherboard chipset you're using, so it's hard to be more specific. If by chance you have
a spare, try swapping the cable out. If there is another device on the IDE channel, try removing it
temporarily.

Also check your drive jumpers - maybe the disc came set for C-Select? I had a Mandriva install on a Dell box
that *really* didn't like it unless the disc was appropriately set to either slave or master.

If that fails, you may be looking at a failed IDE controller chip. If you have a spare PCI slot, you may
be able to fix that for a few quid by getting a PCI IDE board.

Just my 2p. Hope it helps.

Regards,
