Hi Cliff,

When you say connected I presume you mean your modem connecting to your ISP? and also that you can connect if you log onto your router and manully hit the connect button? Or is this a network connect issue - have you tried fixed IP addresses locally instead of DHCP?

Here is my experience thus far of Netgear:-

I have a Netgear RangeMax DG834N. Which I have replaced twice, I know Netgears customer support quite well by now. (Indian call centre woes!)

Anyways, when it works now it works well. However sometimes I have to reboot a few times for Wirelessto start working properly.

The first ADSL modem that I had died out of Warranty - DG834. As Neel will tell you we CRONed a script on a FreeBSD box that was connected to the router to connect to my ISP if it was disconnected, the router had a nasty habit of dropping the ADSL connection every so often. (ran every 10 mins). i can dig out the script if you wish - also I have a spare Linksys WAG54GS wireless router you can borrow if you want to do some testing - or even try out for a month or two.

I can't make it to the next meeting, but subsequent ones should no longer be a problem, I am playing around with Ubunto and trying to boot various distros off my USB pen drives. Quite like the idea of have a keyring of distros to boot from, depending how my I'm feeling. I'm finding that my moods are dictating which distro I play around with, I need a holiday!

I need a little help!
I use a network of 3 PC's which on a normal day would be sharing
broadband access via a Netgear 834GT wireless router. My contract with
BT is for a 2MB/s service.
One PC is wired the other two are wireless.
Normally everything is switched off overnight and is fired up typically
around 0700 each day.
Over the past few months the delay between switch on and getting
connected has been increasing, starting as a few seconds it is currently
more than 30 minutes.
When it does connect, after a short time it may then disconnect, taking
perhaps an hour or more before it reconnects.
I have had a BT "engineer" check the line, he tells me it is good for
3.5 MB/s.
I have spent ages on the 'phone to Netgear trying their suggestions and
they assure me that the router is good. I upgraded the router firmware
to the latest version.
I have tried operating with just the one PC plugged into the router and
get the same result. I have also tried a single wireless connection from
a different PC with the same result
The problem is exactly the same if I use Windows XP or my usual o/s,
Ubuntu 7.04 (Fiesty)
My last resort is to go and buy another wireless router but before I
spend my hard earned, does anyone have any other suggestions?
All contributions gratefully received!
Cliff

_______________________________________________
Watford mailing list
