Hi Greg ( and all)

l really don't know what was wrong. l'm really getting along nicely with 
Mepis now and don't propose to change to anything else..

That said, l've installed PC-BSD ( http://www.pcbsd.org/) on a spare 
drive and it runs very sweetly. lt's as easy as mepis to install and 
doesn't require much fiddling under the hood :)
