Don't know, and I'm no expert on package managers. I have always imagined that the apt part of Synaptic refers to apt-get. But I also understand that PCLinuxOS is partly Mandriva-based (and partly Debian, I think) and Mandriva is rpm-based.

I much prefer PCLOS to both Mandriva and Ubuntu. Also, PCLOS LXDE is the only distribution I can get to run on my 10 year-old back-up computer (Celeron 2GHz, 512MB) since my main, newer machine blew up a few months ago.<br />

I think we would probably benefit from the more detailed / exact<br />
error message in order to have a better clue.<br />
If it is an older system and the older version of the files aren't<br />
causing you a problem and you are uncertain then I'd be tempted<br />
to leave it....<br />

The computer's working fine but warnings are flagged when I try to upgrade and I was wondering a) whether having multiple versions of some software might inhibit Synaptic from upgrading and b) whether simply uninstalling the older version (using Synaptic) might break anything.

I'll make another trawl through the dross on the PCLOS forum to see if I can find guidance and I may try uninstalling the older versions one-by-one. <br />
