I started to load Ubuntu on an HP Pro 3130 with an empty hard disk and <br>
reached a point where I needed to click to continue but the machine <br>
froze and I couldn't progress. I waited for some time and, eventually, I <br>
switched the pc off. Now, I just get a black screen, whether I have the <br>
ubuntu stick inserted or not. Can you help?<br>

Not ideal, what version of Ubuntu? Try one or more of the following<br>
1. Just try again sometimes things go wrong2. Sounds like you using an image on a USB stick, try burning a CD/DVD and installing from that, I've tended to find install from CD more reliable than install from USB3. Try downloading and installing using the Alternate Installer, if your Ubuntu version has one.<br>

I recently set up 32-bit Mint/XFCE for a friend to rejuvenate an old<br>
Toshiba netbook that had XP on it. I found that only the startup disk<br>
creator on my very similar but newer Toshiba netbook<br>
Linux Mint 18 MATE 64-bit<br>
worked for me. The older version I have on my desktop didn't work for<br>
me.<br>

Part of the reason I use Mint is that the adduser utility has the<br>
--encrypt-home option included which original Ubuntu didn't, last time<br>
I looked. I use this on my laptop.<br>

If you are downloading a DVD image, you need to be aware that to burn<br>
it you need to look through the burner software menus and find the<br>
"Burn Image" option. If you do it in the usual way it simply won't<br>
work.<br>
