I was hanging the arial vertically in the window hoping to get reception.

having just hung it horizontally, the tuning process took much longer (this is under linux) and though i still have no tuned stations i have a picture (of one of the shopping channels (??))
Nearer with each attempt.
I think the booster may well do the trick.
