This sounds like Konq etc are attempting to open a network connection to the 
local machine via a network socket and since firestarter is running, the 
connection gets firewalled.

Try adding a rule to allow the system to talk to itself (and ensure there is a 
rule for the loopback interface lo on 127.0.0.1 )
