[Wolves] *nix packaging; was RPM

Heya,

Fsck me there is a lot of mail on this list. :)

My view is that APT *is* a better packaging system for
the pure reason that the Debian packagers do such a
good job. The actual raw format of APT vs RPM, I don't
know about, but after many years toiling with RPM
machines, APT is perfect.

As for using Debian, only use Stable on machines that
should not break. As an example, we use Stable on
Angel and it is rock solid. It is crap that it is
unsuitable for critical machines as security updates
are made available very soon after an exploit has been
made available. As for Mozilla nd KDE no tbeing in
Debian, they were the last time I checked. This is not
due to any Stallman non-free rubbish - both are
completely free and comply with the Debian Free
Software Guidelines.

If you want more recent packages, use backports that
are available at apt-get.org or use testing/unstable
and expect something to mess up occasionally. Saying
that, I have been on testing for two years and not had
a problem. I personally use backports of KDE,
Firebird, MPlayer and some other bits. I have a rather
fat sources.list too.

Debian is cool. Use it. :)
