if you go into the mic socket instead of a line in (on a normal card)
you shouldn't need to amplify the signal.  A normal amp will almost
definatly take it over the limits even at very low levels.

A cheap cable radio shack cable to check it all works should only cost a
couple of quid.  You just need dual phono to stereo mini jack.  I used a
cable from an old set of computer speakers in my car to use an old cd
walkman before I got a proper cd  player and the quality was half
decent.  If you remind me before the next meeting I will hunt it down so
you can have a play and see what the quality is like.  It might be good
enough, but then again when is good, enough ?
