Sorry to keep on about this but you obviously know your onions.

Did a little test last night logged in as root (not SU from my user log
in) and Mplayer worked! both video and sound, the video was a little
jumpy but I think I know how to solve that. 

Mplayer still refuses to play sound under a normal user though?  I take
it this is a permissions issue but I haven't a clue what file, directory
or what to change any ideas?
