Thanks for your help guys. Here's what I've got so
far. We don't use a proxy and our router doesn't do
any authentication on the internal clients. I can ping
mail.yahoo.com from a Windows machine and can access
the net fine at the same time as my Linux box can't do
either. The machine has the same hostname as the
Windows machine it used to be.

/etc/hosts has the same dns entries as a windows
ipconfig /all. ifconfig reports the card as up with a
valid IP address (it can after all access the local
network fine).

I tried adding the router's address as the default
gateway and thats when I got my error (SIOCADDRT:
network unreachable). It is on a different subnet
mask, its address is 212.219.142.129 and that is it's
only address. Is this the problem? I've included the
output of ipconfig /all at the end. The default
gateway address is the one I've been trying to pass,
it's not on the same subnet and that IS the internal
(and only, so it appears) interface. Tracerting it
from a Windows box goes straight to that address. The
Windows boxes have no problem with it. Could this be a
Linux subtlety (aka a Windows 'we don't follow the
RFCs' idiosyncrasy) or just a problem with my config?

Hope I'm starting to make sense and heading in the
right direction. Thanks again for your help guys, this
project has taken on more importance now that my boss
has decided to use my Linux box for some stuff he's
been reading about. Sorry to be bugging you.
