I've actually made a few of these and they do work very well.. You can
buy a proper product very much like this from www.cantenna.com I havent
tried one yet, but am told they are quite good.. You can also use an old
chip basket, some doods in oz did it, and they had a few kilometres
using a USB dongle.. 
I've also tried to use an old Sky dish, but failed.. Simply because I
didn't have anyone who was in an area to be able to do it with
me...oooer..

You can buy, from a company called MS Distribution some really nice
outside antennas and all the cables needed to do the pringle thingie..
Ask for Ian if you do call em.. I fancy trying to fix my old CB radio
firestick or bullwhip antenna to use as a wireless unit thingie-ma-bob
