because directx has direct access to video memory.  X is architecture 
independant and shouldn't lose this just so i86 linux gamers can have 
faster games ;-)

Things are getting better and on drivers can now have quicker (more 
direct) access to video memory.  So with a good ati or nvidia card the 
difference will be more slight.

you wouldn't want a linux as vunerable as windows to bugs, would you?
