You can do, yes. On older hardware, the /boot partition needed to be the 
first partition on the disk, but that is not much of an issue with new 
hardware (when I say old, I mean Pentium I and before). Just create your 
new paritions elsewhere on the disk.

What I would recommend if I were you is to nip out to a computer fair to 
grab a second hard disk and put it on there. You then have the peace of 
mind that the two systems are entirely seperate. I have a bunch of hard 
drives and a removable hard disk caddy (these are about £7) and it does 
the trick really well. I have always felt more comfortable having 
seperate disks.

Incidentally, Ubuntu is great. I am sure you will love it. :)
