Did this machine have grub installed anyway (a dual
boot machine perhaps)? is the "word grub filling the
screen" the grub command prompt waiting for input?
Basically could it be that the failing disk meant that
it got as far as grub which then failed to find a
valid operating system and so sat there waiting for
you to tell it where to find one? 

Just a thought.
