That could well be the problem. I think it is worth installing that.

If you have edited the PAM config files for these services I think
things will fall into place once you can get `getent' and `id'
working.

Install ncsd. I run it on all the AD integrated machines and I guess I
read somewhere when I researched this that it is either required or
very helpful
