Done :) I'd forgotten about that. I absent mindedly
put the IP address of eth0 as the gateway for eth1. I
didn't know what to put. I double checked against my
smoothwall box, which didn't have a gateway specified
for it's green interface, so I just commented it out
on  the other machine and hey presto.

It now does ifup and ifdown cleanly. I guess a little
knowledge is dangerous in the wrong hands...
