An easier way of doing this is to open up Configuration Editor from your
menu (or gconf-editor from a prompt) and browse to apps -> nautilus ->
preferences and tick the always_use_browser option. Although as Jono
said I would give Spatial Nautilus a chance, it takes a bit of getting
used to but is worth it once you get the hang of it. Here's a link which
