I think that Its nice when something works out of the box, but its not just about replacing windows as an OS. There's a great feeling when you do something under the bonnet that makes it work. It is not so much about computer literacy ( and Vendor lock-in) but computer lingustics, so to speak. It gives you a great sense of power when you know that you did something just by typing a command or two. If linguistics is the word to use, I'd be on Berlitz book of computer language for tourists. There aren't enough (any?) courses on Linux around for beginners to take the plunge, its all largely words of mouth. If only there was a better way to get people to make the change.

Oh don't worry, I didn't take it the wrong way. It's pretty difficult
to upset me....usually :-) If there is a thread running that does
upset me or I don't agree with then I tend to say a small piece and
then leave it alone.

As for things working after some tinkering :-))))) I have been trying
to get a router for a few days - in preparation for going BB (sorry
Peter). It worked in Linux so I thought 'yes'!!! Strike one for
Linux as it wouldn't work under M$ systems. It turns out - after a
couple of e-mails to D-Link support - that the network interface had
been disabled in my Win2k drive. Why I don't know, but once enabled
again it all works as it should. The good point is that I found out
why it wasn't working myself, through my own troubleshooting. Shame
it was M$ really..
