Sounds weird. Are you definitely sure you're not
running out of disk space?

df -h

Prints disk usage. -h means human readable ie in MB
and GB rather than numbers of blocks.

Alternatively, you might be using disk quotas, which
is unlikely.

quota -v

should tell you about disk quota.

Finally try gftp --info and ulimit -a to see what gftp
thinks and what file sizes bash allows.
