I have run Linux on numerous Dell laptops and desktops over the years.
Pretty much everything works on most modern ones. You might get the
odd sticky wicket with some of the more wierd video cards, but on the
whole they're okay. Best thing to do is have a squiz at
http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/dell.html searching for the model
you're interested in and see how much work others have had to get one
working.

There's also a fairly active yahoo group for Linux on Dell kit.
