My default display manager is gdm - which didn't exist. That seems a 
little careless of apt dependencies. Maybe I was remiss in running 
uprade rather than dist-upgrade first.

I installed it and got a login screen then a lot of brown. I'm now 
installing ubuntu-desktop in case any other trivial bits and pieces are 
missing. "Too easy" they said.
