Simple one word answer: Yes.

More complex answer: Yes, though the configuration is appropriately more 
complex.  You will see the leafnode server as a single server with ALL the 
groups from the upstream server, ie groups A, B, C and D (and all the way 
to zzz.zzz.zzz). AFAIK you cannot make it rewrite the identity headers on 
messages that you post (it shouldn't do, it's a server).  That is a job 
for the newsreader.

If you fetch the articles in a previously unread group, 
it will serve a temporary place holder article than fetch all the current 
articles from the relevant server the next time fetchnews is run (don't 
try any alt.binaries newsgroup on a dial-up!)

Watch the disk storage, as it keeps a local copy of each message in each 
subscribed newsgroup (it does try to keep a track of cros-posting). So you 
will need a lot of disk space in the spool directory if you subscribe to 
any high volume groups (e.g. alt.binaries.*, groups with large numbers of 
pictures, etc.)
