Slightly off-topic, but this has been the underlying premise for many, many 
Sci-Fi story lines, probably best summarised imho by the cyberpunk genre.

It seems inevitable that working along current economic drivers that this is 
always going to happen and it's only the existence of specific legislation 
and bodies that attempt to enforce this legislation that is slowing this 
progress.

There is (at least in the UK) legislation that is meant to prevent a supplier 
from abusing its position due to 'significant market share', whether its 
fairly and routinely adhered to is another matter entirely.
