I Knew about the gaim method.  But the news about web based is
interesting, could this be google's new way round incompatiblities
between os's do you think?  Make everything web based then they only
need three client's effectively one for netscape based browsers, one
for ie and one for safari (? if that is the name of the mac browser). 
Nothing much changes with Browser technology or internet protocols.
