Whether you can resize a partition and then repartition a disk,
depends on what filesystem you've used. I know reiserfs can be grown
and shrunk, and ext3 (ubuntu default) can also be grown (i'm not sure
fi shrinking is supported or not).

As Al said, it would be easier to start from scratch (if it's still a
new install) then spend some time figuring out how/if you can resize,
backing up data, resizing and then hoping it all works :-)
