Hmm, this definitely a can of worms then.  I was hoping that I had
simply missed an option in the options dialogue.  I am not a fan of
the command line which is why I like the shortcut idea.  But, it would
be good to have a properly configurable option rather a kludge.  Not
everybody likes loads of icons on the desktop.  I'm thinking not only
of myself but of others who may wish to see this behaviour in OOo.

I would like to say thank you for all the input to my question.  It is
very much appreciated.
