A full backup is a complete backup of all files.
A differential backup is a backup of everything that's changed since
the last full backup.
An incremental backup is a backup of everything that's changed since
the last incremental backup.

So, if you do a full backup every Monday, and then a differential
every day, and you want to get back to Thursday, you have to restore
Monday's full backup and then Thursday's differential backup.

If you do a full backup every Monday and then an incremental every
day, and you want to get back to Thursday, you have to restore
Monday's full backup, then Tuesday's incremental, then Wednesday's
incremental, then Thursday's incremental.

Hope that makes sense :)
