Hey Mo (where you goin to with that gun in your hand*)

I don't know of any Ubuntu issues which would cause
this kind of problem, but I did come across an article
today which discusses disk performannce:

http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/how-fast-is-linux-sata-hard-disk.html

It's more specifically about SATA and in fact
discussing read speeds, where your issue is more
likely write speed, but perhaps it will take you in
the right direction.

I would be worth searching Google for variations of
'ubuntu <disk make and model>', swapping in the word
'linux' for 'ubuntu' and adding the word 'speed', just
to see if anyone else is seeing a problem with the
same disk.

If not then I think your down to reading hdparm
tutorials, looking for indicators of poor performance
and working out what needs to be tweaked.

Sorry I don't have a proper answer.

already obvious. Comedy legend, me :)
