Which also means they don't have to deal with your
problems if there's something wrong with your mail,
because if it's on your machine, it's your problem :)

It also reduces the amount of stuff they have to
backup and then try to recover if anything bad should
happen. Better for them that it's a smaller proportion
of mail for a smaller proportion of people than all of
everybody's mail.

For you, one benefit of POP3 is that if you have a
measly mail quota, keeping it locally rather than on
the server means you get to keep your mail quota
almost unused most of the time if you collect your
mail regularly, rather than having to delete stuff to
accept more mail.
