Thanks for your replies! Rescue mode doesn't seem to exist any more, which is a bit daft. Im going to have to wing it I think. The live cd mounts the partitions so if I chroot /media/hd that should be Ok do you think? There are 3 partitions, /,/home and swap so as far as I understand it there shouldn't be anything else to mount?
