Well, if you run the command to reconfigure xorg, it's very likely that the
bak file is no longer the one which you had before the problems started as
each program rewrites.

You do not say what graphic card you have. If it is an nvidia, have a look
in xorg.conf
If you find "nv" there it means you use the free driver which does not
support 3D acceleration. You need to use "nvidia" instead. I am in Windows
right now, so do not know the exact name of the menu entry. Have a look for
something like "Enable proprietary drivers" In this way you should be able
to enable nvidia module.
