What mail client are you using? Evolution I would imagine seeing as
Ubuntu is a Gnome desktop (Don't worry about that) I'm not an
Evolution user but I bet under 'Tools' there is an 'Anti-Virus' option
if its like KDE's default mail client there will be an easy to follow
wizard (Like you get on Windows) usual stuff, click next, next next.

The guys will probably correct me on this one but "Upgrading to the
next version (Distribution) is a little bit more complicated you'd
have to add the repo's ect. I'd leave that idea alone for a minute.

Also forget Synaptic for the minute, while its great for new users the
guys want you to run the commands in a terminal (Gnome Terminal) so
that you can report back what it says, if there are any errors. So the
1st step as Adam says is to type:

sudo apt-get update

If everything goes OK and you don't get any errors such as "Cannot
find universe, stable" (Those are examples) then you should move on to
the next command:

sudo apt-get upgrade

This is a bit misleading for new users what it in fact is saying is
"Upgrade my install to all the current packages" its not going to
upgrade to the latest version of Ubuntu.

I have sneaking suspicion this might be what you think the problem is?
you are doing "Upgrade" and expecting Ubuntu 9.04 thats a whole other
ball game. You can do that the easy way by using an install disc (Dave
Morely can post you one of those) or the hard way by editing your
repos.list and adding the 9.04 repos but for you I would say "Leave it
alone".

Na, if it can mount a USB CD or DVD drive your laughing

There are about 4 other ways that I know of to get 9.04 on there but
its unfair to tell you as you have enough on your plate as it is. Keep
asking they're all lazy so and so's on here I'm the only busy one.

Failing that get one of these unwashed heathens to meet up with you
and fix it for you they've got bugger all else to do of an evening :-)
