I recommend the latter. If you enable the root login and later remove it 
  with "sudo passwd -l root" it leave cron in a mess and fails to do 
maintenance tasks. You will see CRON messages in syslog saying the User 
account has expired - so I found :(

You can set the root password not to expire if that happens using "chage 
-E-1 root" and cron picks up where it left off.
