a friend next door have been give a external hard that is 40GB , it
works fine on his ubuntu 9.10 computer but when connected to mine
(ubuntu 9.04) it sounds
like fred flintstone inside the hdd.

there is no psu but has a socket for one .

the model number on back is ME250u2c-0448 any ideas what sort of power
requirements for this device?

lsusb returns

Cypress Semiconductor Corp. CY7C68300A EZ-USB AT2 USB 2.0 to ATA/ATAPI

the hard drive makes that strange noise when connected too his
lcd/hdtv as well.

maybe something to with usb1/2 power requirements?

thx for your help

I have noticed that on ebay there are special usb cables that have a
small power jack plug as well as the mini-usb maybe that would solve
his problems connecting the external hard drive too his big lcd tv.
