Hello all,

Richard Stallman will be giving a talk at the University of Birmingham
this month. This talk is officially being organised by the School of
Computer Science, however, thanks are due to Mez (Birmingham
Co-Lugmaster) for arranging the initial contact which has led to this.
Thanks are also due to Bob Hendley in Computer Science who has done the
work to make this happen.

RMS will be talking on "Copyright vs Community in the Age of Computer
Networks". Abstract: Copyright developed in the age of the printing
press, and was designed to fit with the system of centralized copying
imposed by the printing press. But the copyright system does not fit
well with computer networks, and only draconian punishments can enforce
it. The global corporations that profit from copyright are lobbying for
draconian punishments, and to increase their copyright powers, while
suppressing public access to technology. But if we seriously hope to
serve the only legitimate purpose of copyright--to promote progress, for
the benefit of the public--then we must make changes in the other
direction.

The talk will take place in the Haworth Lecture Theatre, University of
Birmingham. The Lecture theatre is in building Y2, which is the main
School of Chemisty building, it's just down the hill from Computer
Science on the right (not to be confused with Chemistry West).

Start time is 6pm on 25th August.

The talk is open to all and will be followed by the official Birmingham
LUG meeting which will take place in the Bratby Bar, Staff House.

My apologies for not getting this message out sooner, I hope this
doesn't spoil too many holiday plans, but it has taken longer than
expected to confirm the arrangements.
