That usually means your apt cache is out of date... have you made any 
changes to /etc/apt/sources.list recently? Can you resolve the addresses 
repos that you have in there? Have you tried using a different repo server?

Those 404's usually suggest that the package no longer exists on the 
designated server, often because the package(s) have been upgraded. I 
had a similar problem with Debian Lenny when Squeeze became the current 
version and they re-jigged the repo servers - updates and installs 
simply stopped working overnight.

Mr. Morley should be able to advise us if there is any trouble going on 
within Canonical that might cause this problem.
