An old colleague of mine (a programmer)  used to call it the "cardboard 
cut-out programmer principle"... tell a "victim"  about the problem, 
explaining it as detailed as you can - they don't even need to 
understand it (might even help if they don't) - and by the time you get 
to the end, you'll at least have some ideas of what else to try.

It applies to just about any type of problem... programming, admin, 
relationships, d.i.y. and probably even gardening!
