                          I am thinking about leading a group of people
                          who want to learn more about computers.<br>
                          Computers are tools. Most computing courses
                          teach the use of computers as tools, how to
                          use email, how to write documents, how to
                          browse the web and so on. &nbsp;If this is all you
                          want then you can probably ignore the rest of
                          this message. However, if are you interested
                          in what goes on inside the box then read on.<br>
                          <br>
                          There's been some publicity recently about the
                          need for children to be taught programming. &nbsp;I
                          wonder if others might be interested in topics
                          like:<br>
                          " &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Understanding the microprocessor.
                          &nbsp;What really goes on when it messes with your
                          bits and bytes?<br>
                          " &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Understanding networking. &nbsp;How does
                          your computer talk to Google?<br>
                          " &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; What is the operating system? &nbsp;What
                          does it do for you?<br>
                          <br>
                          Automating things.<br>
                          How can you make your computer do what you
                          want? Do you want to programme it, or to write
                          scripts that use existing tools to do clever
                          things for you? What are shell scripts?<br>
                          Economical computing.<br>
                          Do you want to get and use professional
                          quality software for free, without committing
                          computer piracy.<br>
                          <br>
                          I would be happy to construct a course to
                          cover topics like these. &nbsp;I am now retired
                          from a job where I worked inside computers. I
                          spent my time designing systems, programming
                          them and administering them. &nbsp;I also taught
                          programming to engineering undergraduates.<br>
                          <br>
                          I would hope that participants would bring
                          their own computers. I will use Linux on mine,
                          but the same software I use is freely
                          available to run on Windows and, I believe, on
                          the more recent Mac machines.<br>
                          Are you interested? &nbsp;If so, please make
                          contact by replying to this email telling me
                          which of the above topics appeal to you. You
                          are free to suggest other topics which I might
                          cover if I am able. Help me to create a course
                          that interests you and stretches me.<br>
