I've been running with NTL broadband since May 2001.

There have been one or two service outages during that period but on the 
whole I'm quite pleased with their performance.

As far as Linux-friendly goes I can't comment (I'm running FreeBSD as my 
gateway OS) but the principle is the same. The only difficulty a Linux user, 
new to NTL, might experience is that the cable modem MAC address registration 
is now automated using a Windows utility. This shouldn't be a problem for you.
