My Fedora install failed [cd did not read a package so the install stopped]
and took out my Master Boot Record, from a wonderful grub menu listing all my
distro's to 'missing operating system'.
To recover ..
boot the fedora core 1 CD
at the boot prompt
linux rescue
choose the right country and language
skip any attempt to find a previous install
Leaves us at a # prompt
make a mount point (mkdir /mnt/suse)
mount my Suse partition (mount /dev/hda9)
chroot /mnt/suse
Check a grub-install is found (which grub-install)
grub-install /dev/hda
exit to leave the chrooted shell
exit to reboot
And my menu is back ..
Detours:
Along the way I managed to fdisk /mbr my 2nd hard drive [fdisk /cmbr 2] and
install grub's menu from /dev/hda onto /dev/hdb.
That is when I discovered that my pc's bios is smart enough to select any of 4
installed hard disks to boot from but that Windows will always boot from the
first installed disk regardless of what the BIOS says :-(
I also found out just how good SmartBootManager is.
Now to try and replace Peanut with Fedora again ...
May 2004 exceed your expectations
Tony
