I run software RAID-1 mirrors on my Linux systems and I've had one of a pair
of both Maxtor and Western Digital drives fail. The other drives, from the
same batch and bought at the same time, continue to work without errors.
I guess it's a sign of the times that hardware is engineered down-to-cost and
quality and reliability suffer as a result. It might be worth trying Seagate.
I haven't used them in a long while but I never had a bad experience with
them when I did.
Contrast this with a pair of Fujitsu 10GB UDMA-66 drives which have been
running in my FreeBSD system 24x7 for the last 5 years, without even a
glitch.
