Hi,
I'm looking for a Digital Camcorder that will play nicely with Linux. In
preparation for this, I've added a Radeon 9250 Graphics and Firewire cards to
my system.
I've surveyed the following Camcorders:
Canon MV880X
Panasonic NV-GS75B
Sony DCR-HC42
As with most of these things there are pros and cons to each model but I'm
presently favouring the Canon MV880X for its 16:9 mode, white LED lamp for
0 lux filming, electronic image stabilisation and 14x Optical Zoom. It doesn't
have much in the way of manual control for things like white balance though.
All three models provide 1394 DV Out and USB for transferring still images to
the PC.
I'm planning to use dvgrab and ffmpeg to capture/transcode the video and
kdenlive to perform simple editing (I've seen Kino but it has too many GNOME
dependencies for my KDE system) and K3B to perform final VCD/SVCD/DVD
production.
Does anyone on-list have experience of using Digital Camcorders (particularly
any of the above listed models) on Linux?
Regards,
Neil Darlow
