Hi Dave

Yes and no I am afraid. Yes we can use any [1] supported webcam with a Pi,
but we cannot use the picamera python library with these cameras.
By using the official Picamera we can use the existing Python library and
this camera renders images directly to the GPU, which gives us a speed
advantage over a generic USB web cam.

I've used both with a Pi before, and there are pros and cons for both.
