Steve's mentioned a couple I use.
Whether this is the easiest way to do things, I don't know but I make regular use of the up arrow to get back through the command history.
Also rather than clearing the whole history, I edit .bash_history to delete everything except a number of strings which I use regularly.
I also make frequent use of locate to find files.
