[Bradford] A different type of CD burning

This came up in conversation a while ago at work and my research so far 
has come up with very little.

It is possible to burn a visual image onto a CD, not litescribe but the 
actual data on the disc creates the image. All I've managed to come up 
with so far is the link below, has anyone else tried something like this 
or know of any projects which may have continued this or know of any 
other funky similar stuff?
