[Bradford] Fwd: Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal" Available

I downloaded 11.04 when it first came on line today. I put it on a USB stick and
have just run it on my Eee PC901 from the USB stick.
Initially I thought I could live with it but I soon changed my mind as the Unity
menu didn't function properly.
Take the situation where an app has already been launched and you want to launch
a second app. You move your mouse over to the left and the Unity menu appears.
Then move down to the icon you want and, before you have a chance to click on
it, the menu disappears. In my view the menu should not hide at all if you have
a cursor on it. Personally I prefer standard Gnome with the AWN navigator. The
Unity menu does not have all the functionality of AWN atm and, as it doesn't
operate correctly either, then it is a thumbs down for me. I am sorry for
people who are trying Ubuntu for the first time and come across this default
desktop.
Far better, I think, for Canonical to stick to Gnome and put some effort into
improving an existing dock such as AWN, GnomeDo or Cairo.

I think that Gnome 3 might come with 11.10 - that will operate very differently
and have no minimise buttons on windows.

David, I see that you were right about the even number LTS.

Brian

"Form and function are a unity, two sides of one coin. In order to
enhance function, appropriate form must exist or be created."
-Ida P. Rolf

The Ubuntu team is pleased to announce Ubuntu 11.04, code-named
"Natty Narwhal". 11.04 continues Ubuntu's proud tradition of integrating
the latest and greatest open source technologies into a high-quality,
easy-to-use Linux distribution.

For PC users, Ubuntu 11.04 supports laptops, desktops and netbooks
with a unified look and feel based on a new desktop shell called "Unity".
This version supersedes Ubuntu Netbook Edition for all PC netbooks.

Developer reference images are provided for select Texas Instruments (TI) ARM
platforms, specifically the "PandaBoard" and "BeagleBoard".

Ubuntu Server 11.04 has made it easier to provision servers, and reduce
power consumption. Ubuntu Server 11.04 for UEC and EC2 has a new kernel and
improved initialization and configuration options.
